چکیده

This work evaluates the potential for drought detection of the Fraction of Absorbed Photosynthetically Active Radiation (fAPAR) estimations operationally produced by the European Space Agency (ESA) as the Medium Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MERIS) Level 2 Land Product. MERIS fAPAR daily data were used to produce 10-day time composites. The selected study area was the Iberia Peninsula. Seasonal anomalies were calculated for the fAPAR dataset as well as for those of other drought indicators from different sources, such as the Standardized Precipitation Index, a widely used drought index, or the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). The resulting time series of anomaly maps of different drought indicators were then compared to assess the correlation among them and their ability to detect recent drought events in the area. Results show that MERIS fAPAR has a capacity to detect droughts and offers an enhanced performance compared to NDVI.

Validation of the Operational Meris Fapar Products

This paper discusses the validation of the operational Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) land product which corresponds to the biophysical variable of the Fraction of Absorbed Photosynthetically Active Radiation (FAPAR). The FAPAR value acts as an indicator of the presence and state of the vegetation and it is currently estimated from MERIS data at both reduced and full resolution ...

Uncertainty estimates for the FAPAR operational products derived from MERIS — Impact of top-of-atmosphere radiance uncertainties and validation with field data

This paper discusses the accuracy of the operational Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) Level 2 land product which corresponds to the Fraction of Absorbed Photosynthetically Active Radiation (FAPAR). The FAPAR value is estimated from daily MERIS spectral measurements acquired at the top-of-atmosphere, using a physically based approach. The products are operationally available at the...

Performance of Fapar Operational Products Derived from Meris at the Full and Reduced Resolutions

This paper discusses the validation of the operational Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) land product which corresponds to the biophysical variable of the Fraction of Absorbed Photosynthetically Active Radiation (FAPAR). The FAPAR value is currently and automatically estimated from MERIS data at reduced resolution and it can be computed using the full resolution using the same phys...

Intercomparison and quality assessment of MERIS, MODIS and SEVIRI FAPAR products over the Iberian Peninsula

The fraction of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (FAPAR) is a key variable in productivity and carbon cycle models. The variety of available FAPAR satellite products from different space agencies leads to the necessity of assessing the existing differences between them before using into models. Discrepancies of four FAPAR products derived from MODIS, SEVIRI and MERIS (TOAVEG and MGV...

Meris Global Vegetation Index: Evaluation and Performance

This paper overviews the evaluation and the performance of the Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) Global Vegetation Index (MGVI) algorithm which is implemented in the MERIS ground segment as the main land surface product, also called the Top Of Atmosphere Vegetation Index (TOAVI). MGVI values represent the Fraction of Absorbed Photosynthetically Active Radiation (FAPAR) which act as...
